Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
If I was a framer I would have bought 5 - box framed one and put it in my window
I'm sure all 5 would sell - such is the public's feelings about the 888,246 men and women who gave their lives for our freedom

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
But Keith do you think it is right to profit from the deaths of 888,246?
I don't.
Fine to frame upo something someone has brought in but to buy them and frame them to sell as a profit is dispicable in my book.

Have to agree ^^^
With the outcry there was in the media when some showed up on Ebay I would say putting them up for sale in your shop window would be a bit of a toxic idea for your business. Unless of course you advertised that ALL profit would be going to the charities benefiting from the sale of them in the first place, but even then I think a lot of people would be uncomfortable with it.

Graysalchemy and Tudor Rose,
You both make very good points, which I had not considered. Thank you
I was unaware of them being offered, and the outcry.... on ebay
I would like to think that by framing them and putting them on display we are saying "we will not forget".
If you then give the profit from the framing to the British Legion that's a really thoughtful gesture.

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
I've just had an enquiry for framing one. So please post examples of any you get to frame so I can pinch your ideas.

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
Had a bit of a stab at making a 3D virtual model of a ceramic poppy.
If the diameter is close to 3 1/2 inches, then this to scale for a backboard that will fit in a morso. It made a very quick way of framing cricket bats, which combined with D or cover mouldings from DIY suppliers, makes a 'quick to make version' of the 3/3 case, which has seen many variations since the Victorian times.
For a bit of battlefield detritus I have added a 303 Lee Enfield, 8mm Mauser and 8mm X 50 Lebel. Just to offer a possible idea image is taken from a sketchup model.

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
I think a soft focus b and w photo of one of the Tower's towers behind the poppy would provide good context.
Wasn't the furore about eBay actually media making? I thought eBay disallowed it as the lady didn't have the poppy in her possession when she advertised it. There was a discussion on LBC radio, there were as many people happy to buy one pre owned as those who objected to the idea.
It was a wonderful and very moving work of art. It is just a shame that more of the proceeds didn't go to charity.

There's more to the picture, than meets the eye. Hey hey, my my.

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
I can't understand why anyone you would frame one when they are ceramic. It would take almost as much effort to dust the framed one as dusting the poppy itself if you kept it in a vase for example.
To be creative we must lose our fear of being wrong.

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
Does it depend on the source of the commission? Many framers are immediately focused on conservation, when presented with a subject that has a possible long term values, but the primary motive for the commission may be display.
With artifacts or objects the primary cause for presentation may be more disparate than the more straightforward reasons for framing 2D. The earliest needs for framing was a means to hang a picture not protect it and to my mind this act was closer to publishing than the current idea of the framers position in the chain.
Grouping is a motive to frame, this does not need the protection of glazing. Perhaps the client might come up with more reasons to frame than the framer can imagine.
With experience of the subject matter, family history, medals, death plaques and other memorabilia with artifacts it is unwise to cutoff the personal histories this rather creative addition to the history may add to the framers craft.

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
Has anyone done any of these yet? I've just had an enquiry but he didn't have the poppy to measure. What sort of depth are they?
If anyone has any pics that would be great, the customer has asked for the poppy to be framed above the certificate that came with it.
Thanks!

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
Good point, I was just after a rough idea of depth to help select some suitable mouldings...

Re: Tower of London ceramic poppy!
The box they are posted in has an internal dimension for the bit that holds the poppy of 127mm square. So none of the poppies should be bigger than that, otherwise they wouldn't fit the special boxes.

Any methods on attaching the poppy head into the frame, without the use of the supplied metal rod (stem).
