Surely the shadow is part of the 3D effect. If it is right on top of the backing it will look 2D and could be a picture.

Indeed, but the lasercut floating in a box frame and the space fore and aft makes it appear 3D.

I think i've found what im looking for. Is this achievable for a DIYer like myself?
Not really sure of the process that mitretight has gone through to get such a great looking result.
