Well I did have a quick look through a massive amount of photo albums with no luck - they're there somewhere.
Afraid the only digital ones are near the end - so here's an edited one - Pat wouldn't thank me for a close up of her!
The paws speak volumes.

I've been using this quite a bit recently. It's best applied with a brush. It's quick, easy and the result is good too! For a matt finish seal with a top coat of "acrylic varnishing wax" and gently rub with 0000 grade steel wool.

I followed Spit's recommendation when I first put this posting up, namely stain/seal/stain/seal etc, etc and I must say it's replicated the moulding appearance I was after really well. It's the seal that did it.
Thanks Spit...!

Hi all,
I've just put a more formal descriptive recipe for this in the Oracle:
http://theframersforum.com/pmwiki/pmwik ... StainedAsh
Please note that the method works to intensify other colours as well, and before you put the varnish or wax on, you could add liming or patinating wax, or other grain highlights. Happy staining!

Just had a bit of an accident - started staining a length with what I thought was black stain, only it turned out I'd picked up the wrong pot and it was dark jacobean. Never mind, I'll just go over it with black..... Thats when I made this discovery.
You can put several layers of black stain on top of each other, but usually if you don't use sealer it doesn't make a fat lot of difference - however, using a coat of jacobean first made a hell of a difference - it made what I would describe as a solid 'soft' black, without having to use sealer between coats.
It's another method to consider, as it takes out a layer of sealer, therefore takes slighly less time. I would still use two coats of sealer on top though.

Mixing a black pigment into a clear wax works well to finish over the polish. This can also be used on its own to give a smokey "Black limed" effect.
