Can anyone tell me what is the best sewing thread to use for tensioning cross-stitch material around card. also where it might be bought?

We tend to use crochet thread and we buy ours from the local haberdashery shop.

When I was being trained I was always told to use mercerised cotton thread - easier to work with apparently, I've never questioned it as I've never had any problems
