Looking for a moulding

Post by birdman »

We have been asked to find a match or similar for the following combination. It is a gold scoop moulding, a linen slip or liner with a gold sight edge or possibly a separate slip. I haven't seen the actual frame myself because it is hanging in a board room somewhere. I would estimate the gold frame is about 2" wide, the linen liner about 3". It is to fit a stretched oil painting that I do have that is 3ft x 2ft.

The gold frame looks like it has a darker line on the inside but I'm told that that is just shadow on the photo.

I have been looking through Simons and Arqadia catalogues because they are our main suppliers but have only identified narrow linen liners/slips in the Simons catalogue that are similar and have a gold sight edge.

Does anybody recognise the gold scoop moulding and know who might be the supplier? I'm also looking for a wider linen liner/slip? I may also try to encourage them to accept a painted inner with a gold edge so that would be another option.

It is possible that it is no longer available because the frame was put together in the late 90's but you have to ask. :-)

Grateful for any help please.

Rolf

I think you are going to be hard-pressed to find that liner. I had some until recently, but I pulled the linen off and re-purposed it. :?

The exact gold frame might be a problem as well. You would think there would be 100s that are close, but a similar one doesn't spring to mind.

Thanks Peter,

Every reply helps in some way. I had hoped that some of our traditionalists might have known of a supplier or that a supplier would pop up and say "hey Rolf, we have something just like that", but I live in hope. I have had a couple of suggestions separately for a similar gold moulding from Tudor Rose and I thank her for that.

I think I will probably end up suggesting a painted inner frame with a gold slip.

Cheers,

Rolf

Linen (canvas) liners certainly date a frame. They went mad on them in the 60s/70's. :P Nowadays people have a big down on them unless they are going for the retro look.

You could make your own by wrapping a plain moulding, but then you have to get some fabric that's a perfect match and it's a PITA to do anyway.

I do a lot of painted liners in a sort of mucky ivory colour. Paint off-white and wash'n'wipe over with diluted brown. It gives the same sort of look as a canvas liner but more up to date. There are quite a few finished mouldings of that ilk.

If the guy wants the frames to match it's probably cheaper to reframe all the others the lot. It's asking a bit much to expect the framer to source long extinct mouldings. :?

I had a lady asking about matching an old gilt frame. She said there was a label on the back with the manufacturer's name if that was any help.
It had the date on. 1908.

You're right it is an old fashioned look but then these are old fashioned people, Peter :-)

I will probably try to get them to take a white or cream (sorry, I obviously meant linen coloured) painted scoop inner with a gold slip. :giggle:

But if anyone does know of anything similar to the outer gold moulding it would be appreciated if you could let me know.

Bump.

Just bringing this back up to the top to see if anyone else who might not have seen this last week is able to help? I need to get back to the customer this week with my 'cunning plan' :-)
