Advice required!

Hi everyone,

Just looking to set up as a hobby framer, and hopefully turn this into a business if things go smoothly. I've just managed to pick up a Morso F guillotine from fleabay as I had some birthday money to spend, and after reading the very helpful posts on this forum it seemed to be the best to get. (and it was a pretty good deal)

I was just looking for a bit of advice on what else I will need. I'm still looking out for an underpinner, but am in no great rush to buy, so would a more expensive second hand underpinner be a better buy than a new, more 'economical' one?

Also can anyone recommend a moulding supplier around Rotherham/Sheffield?

Any advice would be greatfully received.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

The main components of framing are

1)the moulding

This needs chopping and pinning
A) you have the chopper
B) you can underpin (I'd buy a 2nd hand cassese manual underpinner which uses your leg power to fire the pin) or you can side pin which means drilling a pilot hole, hammering nails in across the joint and then filling the holes behind you. You would probably need a corner clamp to hold the worK

2)the glass (or acrylic)
This needs cutting, so you can
A) buy it cut by someone else (cut to size)
B) cut it by hand using a square and hand cutter (from about £20 to £50)
C) cut it using a wall cutter (I.e. Fletcher 3100)

3) a backing board
This needs cutting
A) use mdf and a table saw, or a multi material cutter (which can also cut your glass)
B) use aqua board or alternatives which can be cut by knife using a straight edge, or on a multi cutter (did I mention these can also cut glass?)

4) most pictures will require a mount
These need cutting
A) use a knife and throw the result in the bin and buy....
B) a manual mount cutter (fletcher, keencut etc) or
C) a valiani mat pro or speedmat pnumatic mount cutter (lovely in my humble opinion)
D) a cmc (computerised mount cutter, wizard, valiani, trucut etc) appox 4k 2nd hand, so probably a long term aspiration

5) a method for fixing all the rest together, such as a fletcher point gun

6) sundries
Glass cleaner and cloths
Cord or wire
D rings
Tapes, tapes, tapes and hinges
Knives and blades
A good ruler or three
Tape measures
Hand tools

If there is anything I've missed someone will be along to let you know

I think you missed patience in dealing with marks, dents, twists, scratches and imperfections in the moulding that gets delivered.

Thanks for the reply everyone. I'm keeping an eye out for a second hand underpinner (Cassese CS79 or similar) and a framing gun to start with. I'll then get going with the other items as work (hopefully) progresses.
