Moulding to surround outdoor blackboard

Post by Dave »

Any suggestions, currently looking at extruded aluminium, but a bit pricey for the size. Would a plastic moulding such as Arqadia's Artocore survive a very exposed location.

why not buy some pressure treated decking boards and use them. they are designed to be outside etc?

Bit of square oak with a few coats of varnish should last a goodly while. Varnish the inside as well.
My sign has some round it and it's been hanging in the sun and rain for nigh-on 20 years. Slightly weathered now, but still sound.

Polystyrene picture frame moulding was designed to be used inside not outside. There is architectural polystyrene moulding made, however it is always painted with exterior paint.

Time for some house paint?

We've framed a few things that are left outdoors - shop signs and such. We used a hardwood moulding and plenty of yacht varnish. As Prospero says make sure you do the inside as well as the outside. All the ones we have done are still looking good.

Thanks all. I think I'll go with the aluminium, it's a job for a customer and by the time the varnishing /painting has been done there won't be anything in it price wise.

Dave, you sure? - it wouldn't take that long to do really and I reckon it'd look better. A little bit of paint & finishing doesn't take much :)
