Framing large pieces of glass

Post by Jarvman »

Hi all,

I'm making a frame for someone that requires a large 1300x500mm piece of glass. What is the best way to support such a large piece of glass without compromising its strength? At the moment all I'm using is flexipoints and acid free card backing board. I'm worried this won't be long enough long term. Any help would be great.

Cheers,
Gareth

Not quite with you there Gareth. That's not a particularly huge piece of glass.

I presume you tape the back as well?

As long as the frame can cope I wouldn't bother too much. A fletcher rigid gun would be a wise purchase though.

haha fair enough, perhaps I'm overreacting. I'm a bit of a novice, so haven't made anything that size before. Well, once with acrylic which was pretty awful to work with dude to the static. Will have a look for a rigid point gun, thanks. Do any of you biscuit your mitres. I was going to look for a reasonably priced biscuiter to strengthen the corners. Would rather trust those than underpins for larger jobs. Cheers

I'm a big biscuit fan.

Got me a Skil biscuiter quite a few years ago and it's still in weekly if not daily use. These machines vary a lot in price, but the Skil one was about a third of what some models cost at the time.

Think I saw one in the Machine Mart cat for about 60 quid. :P

I almost never used flex points. I preferred the stronger rigid points or even longer, wire nails.
