What moulding can I use?

Post by pramsay13 »

I am looking for a moulding that is very deep but not with a deep rebate, so the finished part is quite deep.
It should be only 20mm or so wide, and about 20mm deep, with just a normal rebate below that.
Kind of looks like a canvas box, but a normal frame.
Hope that makes sense.

I think I get your drift. :P Something with a steep slope but with a bit of shape to it. This profile seems to be out of fashion at the mo, so nobody is making it. Been looking for similar ones myself..... :(

you could get a plain wood box frame 30mm deep with a plain wood spacer 20-25mm deep glued in(so in effect moving the rebate 20-25mm deeper )sand down and finish however you want

The idea came from an ikea frame so there must be a bit of demand for it.
It is going to be framed without glass so could a canvas box be used and the mountboard glued in?

Just to clarify, I mean a moulding that would look like this.

Try A257 obeche from Rose and Hollis. Should be the sort of thing you are after. They have 3 sizes of this shape and I'm quoting the number from memory so might be slightly out. Would love to show a link to their website  but you will have to make do with requesting their catalogue by post if you haven't already got it. I'll check the moulding code when I get to work tomorrow.

Tudor Rose's memory is indeed correct. The dimensions for A257 Obeche measured from the catalogue are as follows: Width = 22mm, Height = 47mm and from the face of the moulding to the rebate = 35mm.

There is also A255 Obeche to consider. Width = 22mm, Height = 35mm and from the face of the moulding to the rebate = 27mm.

I'm not in my workshop at this late hour, so I am refering to an older Rose and Hollis catalogue at home, but as far as I know both of these mouldings are still in the current catalogue.

Thanks Tudor Rose,
could you give me the sizes for A254 and A256?
I haven't ordered from R&H before.
What is their carriage charge and minimum order?

Carriage charge depends on how parcels there are, but usually around £7.95 plus VAT and there is no carriage free, all carriage is charged at cost according to their catalogue. Not sure if they have a minimum order value or not, we've not encountered one yet and there is no mention of one.

A254 is 13mm across x 26mm deep
A256 is 22mm across, 26mm deep
Both depth measurements are the inside to the rebate

Hope that helps. They are very nice to chat to and helpful so best give them a call 0207 272 5551.
