hi all
know this has been discussed in the past but i cant find the particular thread in which the use of non reactive ( for want of a better expression) silicon was mentioned. I do not want to stick permanantly.
any help appreciated!

You could use sticky foam pads. They are very strong and long lasting. But, if they do decide to fail and they will sooner or later, the tile is going to drop and smash to bits. This goes for any adhesive. There is really no way round it if you want to see the edges.
Fashioning mechanical fixings is more reliable, but they will be visible. My preferred way is to make a very narrow frame for the tile and fix this to a background.

The only issue is how long it would last for. What do you call "not permanent"? I see what the user above is saying, but if you mean very short term that it would work using the foam pads mentioned. I would worry depending on how long you want them to stay up for.. it'd be a bit like a ceramic time bomb (which could also be dangerous, again depending on where they are).
