suggestions please flat glass stiletto shoe
I have a customer who has flat 2mm piece of etched glass in the shape a stiletto shoe obviously this is very fragile any ideas on how to mount this the shape of the shoe looks like it was hand cut, is there a type of glue / fixing that doesn't look ugly to look at as it will be seen through the glass shoe, think it will be impossible to cut a mount for it to sit in plus the fact it still needs fixing onto the back board cant just put a frame around as still requires some sort of fixing for edges not covered by frame and would look awful. the shoe is approx. 8" sq ish
any ideas would be most welcome
many thanks

Lion have some fixings for 3-d items called mighty mounts
they may work
wouldn't be a good idea to use glue
you could also use fomecore and cut the shape into it and cover the fomecore with fabric

You could make a shaped clear polyester film ("melinex") mount like this, but shoe-shaped. http://theframersforum.com/viewtopic.ph ... oin#p91500 or just a couple of melinex straps, thin as poss - you'd see them, but nothing like as much as mighty mounts.

Thanks for the quick replies I did have a look at Lions stuff but didn't really help that much, couple of idea in there but on too larger scale.
The Melinex idea sounds a good one will run it past the owner when she come in.
until then I welcome any other ideas if you have any and have attached a photo of said item if this makes any help

Re: suggestions please flat glass stiletto shoe
Yes, I would say a melinex mount as well, but I was just wondering if a reversed bevelled mount with a close fitting aperture could be arranged to to go around the glass stilleto to hid the slits cut into the backing mount for the melinex to pass through.
It' was just a thought, in case you've got a CMC and know how to do that.
I don't suppose that it would be an easy thing to do, but it could look great if it worked!

I think it's a great idea to cut that shape out of mount board, but the aperture? Toss that and use the fall-out to wrap the melinex under and conceal it - no need to make any slits at all (I'd use straps/shaped straps, not a complete shaped mount now I've seen it). That way the shape would not have to be perfect, good but not perfect, no CMC required (I couldn't cut that shape with my CMC software/techie abilities anyway) and you could either reverse bevel that fall out or cut it at 90 degrees and then maybe paint it (the exposed edge) black or to match the board colour, if it's not an off-white/neutral colour.
I'd use two straps on the heel between the black bars, another cut to shape on the toe and one more on the top, shaped or not.
Then you could stick that fall out, with the shoe fastened to it, with anything you like that won't fail - on to mount board the same colour, or not.

Just a thought... Get a sheet of 5mm foam core and lay the glass thingy on it. Draw round with a pencil. Then cut the shape out a gnats inside the line, slighly angling the cut so you have sort-of shallow reverse bevel. Cover the foamcore with a soft fabric. Cut slits where the fabric goes over the hole and fold under. Glue the foamcore to a light backing - right up to the hole.
You might have to do a bit of fine-tuning with the carving, but in theory you should be able to pop the glass into the hole where it will be held firmly, but foamcore being what it is has a natural 'give' and won't impose pressure on the piece. Just grip it gently. And the folded over fabric will further cushion the edge.
The glazing on top will maybe have to be spaced slightly to lift it off the fabric.
