A quote to remember for all serious about framing

Well I'd not pick a frame like that for a simple plain text page

I posted the original article on my local Camera Club web pages.
I suggested they substitute the word frame' for 'mount/matt' in an attempt to convince them to display their pictures to their full potential by using a complementary mount.
My rallying cry it seems fell on stony ground, apart from the following email.


That's an interesting comment, especially in view of the fact that the Impressionists specified very plain frames that would not detract from their paintings. So what do galleries put them in? Dirty great 18/19th century embossed gilt frames that were just what the artists didn't want. Which begs the question - are we seeing Impressionist paintings as their creators intended? I think not.

What/where was the original article Guzzijim?
There is no denying the poor frame choices over the years, but nowadays, and for the past few decades galleries are trying to pick more suitable frames.
The email about many frames on impressionist paintings being added later is fair enough, but does it not just give another reason to use the right frame?

Unfortunately it details the recent removal of an original Degas frame to be replaced by something less suitable... hope the original frame was kept.

Re. the reply posted on my camera club website, the contributor does not say who or where her remarks were came from.

I quickly browsed through one of your links, John Bratby seems to be of the same mind as regards frames.

I think the rationale is that if you have paid millions of $$$$$$ for a painting, it should be displayed in an expensive-looking frame.

It was me just then.

As a lone voice that thinks that 'the case'/'transparent cover' is a form of framing, this saying becomes quite interesting when tested against those forms of art that would or could fall into the case makers sphere.

Is it just me? What on earth is everyone trying to say?

The actual quote made by Eduado Manet was this;...Without the proper frame a painting loses 100% of it's "Effect". The frame is just the vehicle for the message.
