3 inch box frame?

Post by mrcrimps »

I've been asked to frame a large Chinese fan which is 2.5 inch deep so I'm looking for mouldings with rebates of 3 inch but can't find them anywhere. Can anybody help?

Also I've never done a box frame of this size and so any tips or advise would be greatly appreciated. Not even sure how to attach the fan!

:sweating:

Cheers,

Chris

Two frames made from Simons WYOM/0003 with the moulding mitred and joined on it's side. One of these frames fitted inside the other and then Simons 000J/1079 fitted into the forward facing rebate of the front WYOM/0003 frame.

Moulding colours are almost a good match, so a quick coat of Chestnut golden oak spirit based stain, followed by a coat of Polyvine wax finish acrylic varnish and you're good to go!

The finished result should look like it is all one moulding!

Mouldings that deep are available, but your choice is limited. The better option is to use Mark's method of stacking frames.

Or.... Use the 'Cuckoo Clock' method. That is make a box using basic square timber and fix a face moulding to it. The glass goes in the face frame - in which the rebate depth is unimportant and the box goes in behind the glass. Fix the box to the face frame using multi-points. Or screw eyes if you haven't got a multipoint gun. If the box timber is thicker than the rebate width you can hide the edge with a slip or a narrow window mount. The box inside can be lined to match the backing. There will be no rebate on the back of the box, but the backing can be screwed to the outside.

There used to be moulding that was like a figure 4, much used back in the 50's/60's. This is very good for making box frames. As it flares out you get a nice steep bevel to the inside of the box and there is a rebate on the back. You can still get the smaller sizes, but really deep ones seem to have vanished. Pity really....

btw. You can get fan cases readymade, but not sure if there are any that deep.
