How does this happen ?

I was looking at a website - about a theatre in London
Less than 5 minutes later I'm on here and a banner goes across the bottom with an ad for the same show

How does TFF know I've been on that site ?

Which begs the question - does TFF know any other websites I visit

6th or 7th post down by John (admin) your searches are being tracked by Google, so they show adverts to do with your searches

Or rather, it would appear that no one has online privacy any more from the likes of Google, Facebook, etc.

Europe is trying to regulate this kind of data exploitation, but it would appear that even the massive multi-million euro fines they impose for flouting EU regulations do not act as a deterrent.

You can try opting out with utilities such as AdBlocker,

This thread will get locked by John, so I'll get my tuppence worth in quickly.
The advertising makes sense, it is usually by online shops or ticket places to catch people who have been browsing and are then still thinking about whether to purchase. If they get their product / event in front of you again it might make you go for it.
There are ways of blocking this which will give you generic adverts, or even no adverts, but as John has said previously the advertising brings in a little revenue, so why not allow them?
If you are doing something a little more private you can use private or incognito browsing, so if you want to shop for a diamond for the missus and don't want her to find out, this can be used.

I have no problem with advertising on this site. I usually use an ad blocker but not for this site. If John doesn't get some revenue then ghd site won't survive.

Thanks guys, I appreciate that you are trying to help me out, however I believe that wily old Google filters out multiple clicks from the same source.

My own personal bugbear are the pop-ups that spread themselves all over the screen if the mouse passes over the ad. I looked into trying to block them but so far haven't found a way. Grrrrrr!!!

That seems really bad on newspaper sites, I used to post something on our local rag's FB page, and then add how I hate the papers main site because of the adverts, for some reason my posts were deleted

By the way, I don't mind the adverts on the Forum, most of them are framing related

What I want to understand ( and I don't know why - I'm just curious! ) is.......

I've just been on an Australian daily paper site - and Hey Presto an ad appears for this same London Show which prompted my original post. How does the Australian newspaper know its me, and how does it know I've looked at a website for a show in London? And if I click on the ad - is it the OZ paper that gets commission ?
