First we cut a triangle of card to tie the knot and then just sewed them on to the mountboard

I think there needs to be 18 inches from the top of the knot to the bottom otherwise they look very weird.

as there is no size on that image how can you tell

You could buy a neck-tie clip, something like this: https://www.theribbonretreat.com/Ribbon ... clips.aspx and then fix clip onto or through mountboard.

Aspect ratio. The height is 3.3 times the maximum width. For the height to be 18 inches, the tie would have to be 5.5 inches across at the widest part. It isn't...

I've never done one but my thoughts are two slits at angle like a collar, pass the tie through and tie it in the normal way, Windsor knot/whatever and that's the top sorted. Pass the thin bit through the loop at the back, as per normal then pass that loop through the mounting board and pass a piece of mount board through it ... you may need another slit to conceal excess tie All you'd need then would be one invisible stitch at the bottom.

Just checked the order (2010,how time flies) and the ties are 14" long , there is a note on the order about the maximum size of the frame, as the customer wanted the frame to fit a space on what he calls his "Pride Wall" for displaying his twin sons sporting achievements
Also by the time we had tied the knots there was about 3" of narrow end of the tie left as it just went through the loop on the back of the tie, anyway the customer loved it

I have complete faith in Steve's suggestions. Anyone who knows Steve will know his knowledge its vast, experience unrivalled - a true framing professional. Steve is always free with advice and has helped me on numerous occasions with difficult client expectations.

I really miss Steve, tea in his workshop, and his open friendly chats since moving away from Bath (to Salisbury).

With you method Steve it looks as if everything is out front on the mountboard and nothing concealed behind, is that right? In which case the length of the tie determines what you see framed, and though it's not seen your little piece of card stays in there?

That is correct, and the triangle of card is left in to provide shape, tried it without and the knot failed , if you did not want the tie to be long, you could do it the same way, but as Robo has suggested, cut a slit in the mountcard just under the knot, so the rest of the tie can be threaded through, while the front part of the tie would hid the slit
