My customer has acquired a couple of 15th century wooden plaques that he wants to hang on a wall. He'd prefer to hang them without a frame and has approached me to see if I can do it. I feel it needs a smaller piece of board attaching to the rear, but it's a question of how to attach it such that it's reversible and doesn't damage the plaque. Anybody come across something similar or have any ideas?

I can't see how the plaque could be hung without a frame or without anything being screwed or adhered to it. Perhaps some method of suspending it in a thread/string of some sort that is tied to the plaque?

Otherwise my suggestion might be to use a very narrow flat rectangular frame made flush with the front of the plaque and stained the same colour?

How about one of those springy thingy things?

Could easily adapt or make your own to suit the size and thickness of the plaque and paint the ends black so they don't show against the wood?
