I have found this site to be close to actual file download speeds, some of the others are wildly out. I normally use the same location, (London) then I know any slow down is my ISP.

Skype

Post by MITREMAN »

Hi Guys,
I would like to use skype any advice, I see you can download the program and then you need a headset and microphone or telephone and possible a webcam.

Any advise on makes of phone and webcam? :?

I think i would prefer a cordless phone keeping my landline separate (my landline is with Virgin media).

My computer is a Packard bell (about four years old) running XP with Norton anti-viras.

Thanks
MITREMAN :)

I use a USB Telebox to access Skype via my normal cordless phone. The telebox adapter connects to your PC via USB and to your existing phone line via RJ-11 connectors (standard phone cable) so you can easily switch between calls through your PC and your home. You can switch between the two lines by pushing '*' on your handset.

Maplin does a similar box, "VoIP Voice uConnect" for £14.99, that does the same thing

Hello all.
I have been lurking on this Forum for a few weeks now, although I'm not a framer, just an artist, it gives me some idea of ways that I can ask Framers of how I would like my paintings to be framed and the options I have, its all very interesting.

Just a comment to Spit ,
I got Skype working on Xandros version of Linux, when you log on the Skype download site it checks your operating system and selects the Skype version you need, you have to log on using Linux for the Skype version to automatically select.

It works perfectly on Xandros

We use just a standard headset with SKYPE in the shop.
It is great. Come and join us. Been talking / keyboard chatting to Grahame Case over the past week or so. Beats the phone bill

At home to talk / video link to USA have the logitech webcam. Excellent quality. If you get a Webcam, get one with the built in microphone.

I have a dualphone that receives normal calls and skype - to be honest its carp - the phone - not skype. Ive had a dualphone for few years now - the early model was very good - the latest one is very disappointing and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I went over to TalkTalk business a few months ago - you dont get charged for any "normal" phone calls between 9am - 5pm so my use of skype at work has diminished somewhat. I do use skypeout to send SMS messages to customers who have left mobile numbers - its less than phoning them and seems to be very effective.

USB Telebox to access Skype

Post by MITREMAN »

Hi John,
Thanks for the infomation I will have a look in my local Maplin store, seems a good idea.

I hear what you are saying about a simple switch over button, thats good.

Dose the pc need to be on to receive normal landline calls?

If I was on skype and someone rang the landline would I be notified? Or would they get an engaged tone

I guess skype would provide a differant number to my landline?

Thank you for your help

MM
No need for the PC to be on in order to receive landline calls.

If you are talking on Skype, anyone ringing the landline will get the busy signal.
