Just back from our flying visit and my first time there.

Firstly apologies for not calling in on any fellow JGFs/Forum members - this was a birhday break for Pat and her words were - "If we happen to walk in to one of their shops - fine - otherwise ......." Something like that anyway!

We printed out 2 routes from the Interweb - we have a very nice 2001 road atlas and none of that satnav bollix - so we thought we'd best check no new 12 lane motorways had been built - but we were fine - it's pretty much the same as it was 7 years ago!

The AA route said 250 odd miles and 5 hrs 12 mins, the Google route said 240 miles and 4 hrs 50.

We did it to Newquay (not to the hotel itself) in 4 hours and a smidgin (including a 20 min break) and the trip counter said 240 miles exact!!

Coming back was not quite so quick; everyone else was coming back too - but we stopped at Lyme Regis on the way, which was nice.

Strong winds, low temperatures, pretty much constant rain the whole time - perfect!

Cornwall is not short of 'galleries' is it! I actually bought a framed pastel -
haven't decided whether to keep it or sell it (in a new frame of course )

Anyway - lovely friendly place - actually cheered Pat up after her Nintendo DS lite told her she had the brain of an 81 year old

Shame, the kettle was on....

Went to the Eden Project on Sunday - amazing place, generally.

Problem we - and plenty of others found, was that due to afore-mentioned weather you had to be wrapped up to get from the courtesy bus to the biodomes. Then you find yourself in an environment requiring just a loin cloth!

I was fine of course - pull up a palm frond - I'll tell you all about my time in the jungles of Belize carrying a 24 lb machine gun - and that tick I got in my 'tint' (You don't want to know whereabouts on the male anatomy that is!)

Pat, of course, had never been subject to 'rainforest' conditions and breathable as her Berghaus jacket is - it, and the fleece underneath, became too much to carry, let alone wear!

For me, a short sweaty walk; for Pat, a real expedition!

Hi John,

Does the mention of Lyme Regis mean that your route included the A259, M27 and the slow old A35? If so, 4 hours only leaves me to ask, what on earth are you driving? That's impressive!

No A259.

A27 - M27 - A31 - A35 - A30 (M5) A30.

We left at 1800 Sat - most normal people left Thursday - the roads were quiet.

A30 - esp after the short M5 stint was cruise control at a steady wouldn't-put-it-in-writing MPH.

Driving 'Arfur' my beloved Dodge Caliber, which averaged 43 mpg on the weekend's whole 577 miles.

And in the Eden project they had this wall covered in fridge doors that you could leave a message on in magnetic letters - spot my message

Free beer???
