How to mount an acrylic painting in a floating box frame

Hello,

I'm new to framing and wanted some advice on how to mount an acrylic painting in a floating box frame.

The painting is 500mmx600mm and weighs 1kg. My concern is how to ensure the painting doesn't detach from the adhesive over time.
Would the best method be to attach it to a slightly smaller floating board and then attach that to the mount board? and what glue or tape would be best to use?

Thank you!
Janine

Hi Janine

In order for us to help, could you answer the following question?

What is the painting on? Paper, board, stretched canvas?

I immediately assumed it was painted onto acrylic, but I see where you're coming from! :giggle:

When mounting floating board to back mount I always use EVA. Weldbond is a very strong glue for many materials, however you will effectively be gluing to the face paper of the back mount which will not offer much long term strength. My thought would be to glue some fixings (Lions catalogue?) to the back of the acrylic which would go through the back mount and through a backing board of 4mm+ mdf and attached on the back.

Or forget the back mount and paint the face of the mdf?

Thanks Both. The painting is on a canvas panel, it's slim so not sure i can safely attach any hardware to the back of it without damaging the painting.

But what is the substrate of the panel made of? What is the canvas attached to and how?

the painting is on a Daler-Rowney economy canvas panel which is 'sheets of compressed card adhered to primed cotton canvas'.

heres a link to it (just a different size)

Have you considered close framing it? That would solve the issue. If not of high value, I sometimes use a water based grab adhesive like Bond-It Saves Nails SF, but I'd be concerned that it will eventually pull away from the panel backing paper that its adhered to...

Or use a very small and slim plain square moulding around the panel, and then attach that with screws. You will end up with something looking like a St Ives Frame
