Hi all,

We have just had a nice break in Geneva, full of shops with stunning watches, designer clothes etc.

I saw this in the window of a fancy shop and thought the frame is ghastly (just my opinion), but also does not suit the painting. I don't mind the painting, although i would not have it on my wall, but i think the frame is all wrong.

Thought it would be interesting to see what others think and if you have come across frames that don't work on your travels.

I've edited your post to rotate the image. Once you've attached it, click on the small circle/arrow next to the attachment description and a thumbnail image of the photo will show. Then click or tap on the image itself. It will spin around. When it is in the right orientation click save just below the image and then re-submit your post.

Photos on smartphones that are taken in landscape format tend to load correctly, those in portrait format will need to be spun to the correct orientation. I do try to check all posts as they are loaded and spin images where needed.

Did you go in and ask them for their opinion?
In my experience framers are usually always pleased to meet framers from other countries, and compare shop layout, corner samples and mount boards
Especially in Switzerland where there are basically just 2 distributors, who IMHO have somehow managed to agree to keep prices artificially high.
You will find that the 3 best selling brands of mount board dont even sell in UK.
So quite a different market from UK.
And prices are eye wateringly high.

Yes, it's horrible.
And you too felt it was so horrible that you photographed it and posted it up here for our opinions.
Yet the guy who commissioned that frame didn't think it was horrible!
Was it the artist? - 'doubt it.
Was it the shop? - you wouldn't have thought so, yet they're still unashamed to have it in their window display.
Or was it the framer!!!

The positive thing to take away from this is the recognition that some things are just ugly and need no justification to support that.
The world is safe when there are still people like you who see that.

Unfortunately i couldn't go in, most shops still close on Sundays, but i would have gone in otherwise.

I agree Jkx, i would rather have it in a float frame and i am not a fan either.

Vintage frames, yes correct i thought it was ghastly, but i then wonder whether it is me and am interested in other opinions. To be fair, i think that moulding wouldn't suit any painting.

I didn't see more frames to compare, but will hopefully be going again when we will have a bit more time.

In my opinion that painting deserves that frame.

I don't much like the painting either Justintime, but i have always remembered what i was told by the framer who helped me when i was starting. He said,

"Your choice of frame can make a bad piece of art look good or a good piece of art look bad."

In this case, they have made a bad painting look worse.

It's not actually bad as such. All you can say is that it's got a frame on it.

I guess the Swiss have different tastes to the UK. Who would have thought it...

I hope you will continue to actively engage with the Forum - your post has had plenty of views and comment and sparked a discussion. Nothing wrong with that.

It has the look of the sixtys. frame and image, perhaps its a bit of old stock .
