Final question - I have some A1 and A2 frames and would like to know what the ideal ratio is for mount size... ie, what would the ideal picture sizes be for A1/A2.
Many thanks.

If you’re making your own frames, why not work from the image out?
If you work from the glass size in you’re unlikely to get even borders, sometimes bottom weighting can help.
There’s no ideal ratio it’s just what looks best, e.g 80mm left and right then 50mm top and bottom would look bad but 80/70 not so bad.
If you’re printing stuff yourself maybe you could adjust the image size to suit; on the sizes you mention I wouldn’t want less than 76mm all round.

Many thanks John. I would normally do image outwards but have four A1 and A2 frames I'd like to use.
Thanks for your help.

The first think to consider is that the space between the art and the frame opening, either a mount or float area, should not be the same dimension as the width of the frame. 100 mm sounds like a good start for the width.
I was taught that this space is called "negative space" for the art to stand out on its own.

The whole thing revolves around the image.
Like a lot of things, it's comes under the heading of "It Depends.....".
