Best product or method to fill holes on bare frame ?

Post by Gemmie123 »

Hi
I have a frame that I wanted to just lime and wax but I needed to clamp the corners so now I have the small holes - I know I can just fill these with wood filler ( osmo ) but then the lime looks odd on those sections , is there anything better to plug the holes with then lime ?
Thanks in advance

I had to look into what Osmo wood filler was on line. It is a water based filler and the manufacturer does not have a MDS sheet for the product on-line.

What size nails are you using? Are you attempting to lime finish the frame before or after the wood filler is used? Can you post a photo of what your outcome is, both closeup and of the entire frame.

When I started in the business many years ago, before "V" nailers, using a hole filler was SOP. What is a distraction to one person is not the same to all others. The product does come in assorted stock colors. You would be able to blend several colors together for color matching and layering of the fillers to match.

Thanks for the response
It had been glued and joined with v nails .The holes are just from the clamps
I would be liming it after it was filled - otherwise the filled holes would be really noticeable 🤷‍♀️
I can match wood filler to the wood that’s not the problem - I’m looking for a solution to the liming wax not making the filled holes even more noticeable as it doesn’t adhere to those bits as it does to the rest of the wood .
Thanks

Not a solution this time but for future ref. Prevention being better than cure, get a band clamp!

Once the wood filler has dried, try adding a little shellac over the filler. Use a cloth to just rub some on.
The liming wax should go on to that the same as the timber.

Yep, that's the stuff.
You could paint it on with a paintbrush. Diluting 50/50 with meths always gives best results.
But then you have to go to the bother of cleaning out the paintbrush.

For this I would fold a bit of cotton into a small pad, tip on some shellac from the bottle and smear it over the patches of wood filler.

Try Brummer Stopping. :D I find it blends into the natural wood very well.
Antique Pine matches most pale woods.

What type of wood is your moulding made from? Again a photo would be helpful.

If you are having an indentation from the horizontal supports of a "V" nailer(the back rests) you probably are applying too much pressure from the piston that applies the pressure that compresses the two rails together. It does not take as much pressure as the downward pressure needed to insert the "V" nails.

If the indents are from the top, not knowing the actual brand nor condition of your machine the cause can be one of two reasons. The first is that there is not enough surface area, or a proper cushion for the "hold down". Or you air pressure is too high. The appropriate pressure for most machines is 90-100 psi (~ 6 atm).

I think the holes are from this type of clamp
