There's a moos in the hoos

The other day I left some chocolate on my workbench - I never leave food in the workshop (OK - should't even take it there, I know) not least of all because the roller shutter is not exactly draughtproof, a mouse, or worse, could get in easily.
Well, the chocolate had been nibbled and there were droppings nearby.
I set a trap - with some of the chocolate and next morning the chocolate had gone but the trap had not been sprung!
What could have done this, a very small or a very clever mouse - or did I set the trap wrong?
Anyway - my camera has a motion activation mode and I've left it on a tripod, pointing at a freshly baited trap - we'll see what turns up.

Meeces are smart, and also not very heavy. It is common for them to be able to get the treat without setting off the trap.
You might have more luck with a humane trap, John. I think the mouse would have to go inside it to get at the chocolate. Then you could release it into the wild a goodly distance away.

I've been thinking (I know I have; my head hurts)
Having not had a problem in the past, maybe I'm just attracting them in from outside with the bait. Don't just want to kill meeces for the sake of it.
Maybe I'll nip down later and remove it, if it's not too late.

When you said, “Moos”, I thought you were talking about one of these guys.
I don’t think your trap is big enough.
I was driving home a few years ago in a very heavy fog. I was nearing an intersection and nearly hit a mama moose and two calves that were apparently disoriented. It scare the crud out of both me and the meeses.

You could try the bottle trick. Get an empty bottle with the neck just wide enough for the mouse to get in and put a bit of choccy in it. Leave it on it's side. If the mouse gets in and eats the choc, he will not be able to figure how to get out. You can then take the bottle outside and shake him out. Very humane. Or alternatively hit him on the head with a shovel.

I've just got back and the camera worked - it's worse than I thought, it's a RAT!
It took the bait too and amazingly the photo shows exactly how it did it - bloody clever.
I'll post the photo after dinner.
