Hi, I have a small heat press that I don't use very often. I use 2 pieces of mountboard. I pressed a crumpled printed poster for the window recently (so no value) and I noticed it stuck slightly so I started thinking is there 'proper' release paper?

Check with your local picture frame supply distributor such as Lion.
Release sheets and boards have been on the marked for decades. They were developed when dry mount presses were first manufactured.
The 3 basic types are

• release coated paper like cooking parchment paper

• release film

• mountboard pre laminated with release paper.

Great little machine - in fact it is identical to the first press I used at school in 1979 for my photography O level - happy days. Clear silicone film will work just fine. You really need a piece of 3mm MDF as your topmost layer. This needs to be about 16" x 20" - so bigger than the press top plate. It will act a bit like a snow shoe - to spread the pressure out beyond the top plate itself and stop any marks being impressed into your artwork. The next layer down would be the silicone film - again cut over size to about 20" x 24". These oversize components mean lining things up is less critical.

Then comes your artwork etc. Layer everything up on your work bench and then slide into the gap between the top and bottom plates.

How's retirement? Brilliant!!! - I now wish I'd done it at 55 instead of 59 - but every day is a bonus. Hope the business is going well for yourself.

I've still got my Ademco hard bed press. I am loathed to get rid of it as it comes in handy for squashing things
now and then. The carrier board lives on the top of it and makes a handy shelf for oddments.

Absolutely this! When I upgraded to a hotpress I ditched mine and I’ve missed it nearly everyday that it’s been gone for this very reason. I’ve now got a small antique book makers press for very small jobs but miss the scope that the big ademco 2226 offered. It weighed as much as an elephant and almost as big so sadly no room for it when we moved.
