Slater Harrison - Closed Down?

Post by Steve Goodall »

I've just seen some things popping up to say Slater Harrison seem to have gone out of business - but don't know much more at the moment. Does anyone have more details & if you use Slaters - who will you swap to???

Incredibly sad if that's the case. It does look like they filed for Administration earlier this month.

James Braddock (the MD) has posted on Linkedin...

"A sad day today. Slater Harrison & Webmaster will close their doors for the final time after 95 years in the trade.
As many of you know, I've been here since I left school and it's been a wonderful experience. I'd like to express thanks to colleagues, suppliers and customers for contributing to my time here.
The past five years or so have been incredibly turbulent for the trade as a whole, and even the good years have taken their toll. As I step down from my role as MD I look back proud of my team for everything we did in very difficult circumstances to try to avoid this situation.
So I reflect fondly, but also look forward to whatever the future brings."

Also - very sad - Paul Bowden who has been there forever has changed his status to "unemployed". Paul's missus also worked there as their export manager - so a double blow. I wish them both the very best as they are a lovely couple.

Served on the Guild board with both Paul and James - so very, very sad. Both lovely people and so knowledgeable. This is a big loss in so many ways.

Very sad to hear of any business closing down, but particularly such a long established one. Presumably suppliers will sell off Colourmount stock and then it will no longer be available, unless there's the [slim] possibility of another company buying it out.

Judging by facebook posts from Bollington (where they are / were a major employer) many people are talking about being paid off - so the expertise is fast slipping away. For the senior management to be changing their status to "unemployed" (tragic) doesn't sound like a rescue package is happening in the background. Slater Harrison were the sort of company that was at the heart of a small town - everybody in Bollington knew someone who worked there at some point or other. The local talk is of the mill complex being demolished for housing developments, as it's in quite an affluent area to the south of Manchester.

When it comes to stock I would be changing my sample chevrons pretty swiftly as no matter how much stock is floating around in the market, certain colours will start to run out faster than others. I wouldn't delay in trying to get these either, as there is going to be a "rush" and manufacturers may have been in the dark as much as the end users - so they may be in short supply.

This is the second mat board company to go under in about a year. Here in the US Specialty Matboard Company closed as well. It was mostly a supplier to production house framing operations.
