Mounting Vellum/Leather

Hello,

I have a client wanting to mount a 1m diameter circular ceremonial fan made from vellum/leather. Its got lots of folds in and is pretty heavy.

Looking to mount only, not frame.

How could it be mounted at museum/conservation level, ideally with out any fixings showing?
My ideas so far -
if a reversible glue could be found then glued on magnets - does such a glue exist?
Some type of fastener/clip at several points around the circumference.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks
Sarah

If it were my client, I would be asking a lot of questions about where and how it would be located and displayed.

Adhesives will be absorbed into the the surface of the "animal skin" and thus not be totally removable. I am not an expert conservator with knowledge of ALL adhesives. My first reaction would be a starch based natural or chemically altered adhesive such as Klucel.

Regarding not having any visible means of support and attachment. You could build a custom "strainer" behind the piece to support it dimensionally. It could be rather thin vs 2cm thick boards.

Why no frame, what will they do with it once mounted?

Can you post a photo?

If you want to fix a magnet to a board, it doesn’t really matter what you fix it on with, only the magnet itself touches the artwork. You’ll need a few I should imagine and the ones on top would be very conspicuous.

Thanks.

They want to hang it from which can be done with a support frame underneath. No need then for a frame which will add alot more weight.

The magnets ideally want to be on underside so are not visible. Hence asking about removable glue.

Just to clarify looking for a way to mount it possibly to a subframe structure underneath....

What is your definition of "a lot of weight"; 2 kg, 5 kg, 15 kg, 20kg? What is the actual weight of the object?

The strength of the hanging hardware and the wall it hangs on is a different matter and a separate conversation.
