Mounting Masks to Mat

Hi All,

I'm looking to attempt mounting another mask, inspired by an image I saw in Greg Perkins' book (see pic) where, instead of using a shadow box, the mask is mounted straight onto a mount with no need for glazing. It looks really effective to me.

When looking at a couple of shadow boxes previously, I've cut a fine slot in the mount to take the string before taping it on the back. While this is workable (and the slot does hide the string), I'm just curious if there are any other methods you use for attaching masks without cutting a slot?

I may well end up with the original method; I'm just wondering if there are other good ways of doing this.

Thanks!

I'd suggest that Greg Perkins wouldn't have mounted something directly to mountboard without glazing, as mountboard will attract dirt and moisture and before long warp or cockle. It is more likely that he would fabric wrap a board like mdf Imo.
There are screw fixings available that can have a cap attached afterwards hiding the head which could be painted to match the mask, hiding the fixings.

I appreciate we're speculating about what a third party has done, but the example in question looks like a rag mount. Do you think that that is sufficient for overcoming the dirt and moisture issues?

For this project, I ordered a suedette mat, hoping the effect might be similar to that of a rag mount.

I would think so, but maybe someone else can chip in with an opinion.

I would still want to add glass but if you don't want to do that i would stick the mount downt o a mdf backing board

Thanks both. The key here is no open mat boards. Noted!
