I've got a 100x150mm painting on a canvas-type panel. It's no more than 5mm thick and very light.


I want to attach it to a piece of mountboard. I'm new-ish, it's my first time doing this particular task.
Client has said they are happy for me to glue and it okay that it may not be salvageable in the future.

I have a few questions:

What type of glue would I use? (I have a Lineco PVA glue).

Is silicon better - any recommendations?

Should I instead hinge this with tape (I'd follow that technique on the Lion website where I hinge it to the dropout board and then place that inside the window - but other tips welcome!)

The Lion's website instructions for the hedgehog technique would be my choice. Either tape the fallout back into the window or glue the fallout onto a fresh piece of board for a shadow gap effect. Inside the frame I use EVA glue like Evacon, which is an archival glue.

Most silicones will offgass which can cause issues within the frame package.

There are ways of holding it in place but you’d see the attachments, it could also be sink mounted but you’d cover the edges and your customer probably wouldn’t either.

It probably could be float mounted by using that drop out method but it’s not really designed for boards. However light it is it’ll probably still be heavier than the fall out.

That method uses adhesive on hinges so there’s nothing wrong with using adhesive without hinges really, it’s still adhesive! and that doesn’t mean it’ll end up unsalvageable. If you use a few dots of adhesive (not silicone) they will “pop” off.

Check the back isn’t too absorptive, if it’s something like greyboard it may need priming.

(Do I need anything specific, or would supplies from Hobbycraft do the job?)
