Duck Theason
We have some visitors to our pond.......
Every year they come, and for the past 3 years it's been two males and one female - we're wondering if it's always the same trio - one drake (we call him 'Francis') stays close to the drakess, the other one sort of 'keeps nicks' but if he gets too close to the drakess - Francis starts getting agitated and then beats the carp out of him! Now if this IS the same trio - that's some dedication!
Now the filtration system cost about £800 not including the pump, which is not a proper pond pump, it's a sump pump - some pump our sump pump is too - it keeps giving some of the smaller or less wary fish hairy rides to the header pool and/or the filter box. Sometimes of course they don't make it in one piece. We did builld a brick 'house' for the pump but they still get in - so it has to go and for 4000 odd gallons an hour we're looking at about £300 for a good eco pond pump.
Aaaaaanyway - of course Mrs R thinks they are cute and is a total 'animal person' but I don't lash out that sort of money to keep my pond nice and clear to have it trashed by these three morons, sorry ducks, not moorhens.
So, what do I do
1. Discourage them by throwing things at them
2. Have a word with a gamekeeper type customer I know very well (have them shot IOW)
3. Leave them alone
??

I'm with your cat!
Well, would be with our old cat, Sammy, who used to take foxes on. Then again Francis could be a well 'ard mallard.

Re: Duck Theason
Sammy was a sight to see running at a fox - transformed from a (trust me) total chocolate box cuddly thing in to a mass of claws, teeth and noise - rushing through the long grass in the field behind us, spread low to flatten the grass around/in front of him to give an illusion of a bigger thing.
I read up on foxes/cats after and it's actually no big deal - foxes won't mix it with cats, still a sight to see though.
