Advice Wanted - External USB Drives

Post by Moglet »

Greetings, Forum propellerheads :)

I'm just about to buy an external USB drive, and I've been looking at this one.

I'd really appreciate it if one of our technoframers could have a gander at the spec and advise whether it's "bleeding edge", or whether I could get a faster drive (even if it would cost a little more).

Intended usage is to store music files and provide easy access to archived photo restoration projects, so that my main system drives are kept clearer.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know about that one, but I have a 150Gb. Maxtor ext drive and it has always worked fine. The vids stored on it play OK without any lag. :D

1Tb. Think of all the rubbish you can store on that. :P

I have a 750gb Maxtor one touch - I know that lots of stuff has been put safely in there and when my hard drive crashes or something I'll read the bit in the manual about getting it all back out again!

Anyway - I paid more or les the full price of the one in your link, so I'd say it's a good buy.

Have the 500gb version with about 200 movies on it, works great, bought it at PC World, they also have the 1tb version…

The speed will be dependent on the speed of your PC not just the external hard drive…

I have the 500 gig Maxtor ( bought dirt cheap in London last year) and it works a dream. If you have extra cash, buy two if you are storing important stuff. One tends to drag n drop a lot into it but if that crashes you have a problem - I'm not a propellorhead but because I store all my photography on it I was advised to get another as a back up.

I don’t have an external hard drive so I can’t offer any opinion, but have you tried a Google search for “review: external hard drive”?

Whenever I’m looking for hardware (and, sometimes software) I Google “reviews” and usually get more information that I can deal with.

You’ll most likely get a side-by-side comparisons extracted from some of the more popular PC magazines.
