cost of mirror glass

Post by Mrs C »

Morning Framers
I have been asked to produce a mirror for a customer. In doing so, I have obtained costs from a number of suppliers and I am amazed at the differences in them. The spec is 4mm mirror glass with safety backing, cut to size 1m x 1.5m. Costs range from £14 to £72 (plain) and £24 to £94 (with bevel). How mad is that! Any suggestions as to what is a realistic price?

I have a question based on the above. Is 4mm sufficiently thick for a mirror that size? The times when I've ordered large mirrors (bevelled, btw), I was advised to go for 6mm thickness.

FWIW, Mrs. C, I'd be a bit suspicious of the lower quotations, especially for a bevelled mirror. They sound worryingly cheap to my ears. That said, glass/mirrors over here are much dearer than in the UK.

I have just supplied a frame for a 36" x 48" mirror that was specially made for a town twinning committee for presentation at a civic ceremony in the twinned town in France. The specialist glass company that supplied and engraved the mirror advised against 6mm glass in favour of 4mm I believe due to the increased weight even though it was going in a 5" swept frame.

Regarding price etc. I would go with a supplier I knew and trusted with price (within reason) being secondary.

John.
