Dear Framer
I have read the manuals regarding framing of fabrics but lack in the experience. So....to mount a Football top is this still stiched into the rear mount/backing board! This will be my first time doing any fabric framing, and I thank you in advance for your comments.

I had a look on the forum for this type of job but to no avail, however I did look at the Cap & Teddy mount - Great Work.

Football shirts are fairly straightforward. Shirt is given a bit of shape by cutting a suitably shaped former from mountboard. shirt is then stitched or attached to mountboard back using a tag gun - try and hide stitches - tags where possible. ( purist would always use stitching - matching colours to material - not so easy with modern footy shirts - tags tops can be painted to hide them) - make sure that the material has a natural look - dont stretch it too much - make sure its squared up to the backing sheet - nothing worse than having to unstitch the shirt because its out of square.

Make your frame up using a fairly deep rebate moulding - cut spacers to keep shirt away from glass - i always line the side of the frame with same colour mountboard as back. put shirt in frame checking for clinging bits of muck - they appear as if by magic - just after you have finished taping the back! - by the time you have done a few dozen it becomes fairly straight forward - but always fairly time consuming - so make sure you charge for it.


Nylon shirts can be fiddly - if they have net material panels you have to choose colour of former very carefully - its also worth noting that tag guns have a fairly wide diameter needle - this can damage finer materials. Always work on the basis that you should be able to remove an undamaged shirt from its case - they can be very valuable items and should be treated with care.
