How (NOT) to frame an Artists Proof

Post by Grahame Case »

we were asked to replace the outter GREEN pine wrap frame on a signed artists proof Print on watercolour paper, it was pointed out to customer he would be best replacing the mount, and backing board, he didn't want to spend a lot, so we agreed to change the backingboard Free of charge for him, as we couldn't knowingly let it go out with the same backing board as it came in with.

To be honest, i didn't hold out much hope when i saw this on the back, and my reservations were found to be true when I opened it up.

Simple packaging cardboard - hardly the most suitable backing board.

In we go, and what do we have here? is it a bird is it a plane? no it is more cardboard and lots of masking tape!

lets see what else we have in here... oooh its masking taped all the way around and sellotaped to the mount!

don't know if you can spot it but the print is starting to be affected by acid from the mount and fillet

an interesting way to attach fillets, hot glue and masking tape.

remedy time..

We taped up the fillets with ph7-70 to offer some level of protection until they decide to replace the mount and fillet, a temporary fix. and inserted a barrierboard and Conservation quality artbak.
popped it in it's new frame with the existing glass and sealed it all up.

We'll be providing the customer with these photos and advising them to let us replace the mount on this one and perform work the other 4 pictures they have from the same artist.

new more sympathetic frame
