Aluminium foil tape

I have discovered that a local civil engineering supplies company sells an aluminium foil tape which is used by contractors providing clean rooms in manufacturing environments. They also think it can be used for sealing double glazing units.

I haven't seen any yet, but as it's a very good deal, I am hoping to buy some soon, to see how it compares to the Linco aluminium barrier tape. A 45 metre roll of 50mm wide tape is about £5. They also stock it in 75mm and 100mm.

So I wondering if anyone knows anything about this type of tape, with regard to their suitability for sealing frame rebates, etc.

Got a link?

I use the lineco foil tape from Lion and/or (depending on what I need to order from who(m) a cheaper version from PEL which is exactly the same length and thickness.

But I also have ten reels of foil tape from Poundland (cost me about a tenner if I remember right) - it's nothing like the same quality - it's flimsy and difficult to handle - but I slice required lengths in half - or even less, and it's just great for sealing the glass/mount 'sandwich'.

If it is a UK sourced produce, it is most likely originally from this company…..have a look around their site you may see some of the products you are already using….

It is unlikely that the foil tape used for cleanrooms will be suitable for framing applications, in particular sealing rebates, the foils is very light for picture framing work.

(I used to sell equipment and supplies for cleanrooms)

Correction……. I see PAL have a 100 micron aluminium tape which may work, then you need to consider the adhesive is it ok to use in picture framing packages

Hi John,

Not yet, but the company is no more than about four mile from me, so as soon as I get a mo' I go and get a reel and see what it is like and if it comes with any supplier details.

I don't expect that it will be exactly the same as the Linco tape, but it's gotta be worth checking it out.

Hi Dermot,

Thanks for the info! I see that they have a 100 micro aluminium tape near the bottom of the list with an acrylic adhesive. It could be worth checking out!
