Growing up, a given in school and at home was a sense of quiet patriotism. No one talked about it much, but it was a part of the national character.
In the last few years, however, there has been a sense that Americans should somehow be ashamed of our past. Certainly, there have been blemishes in our history e.g. civil rights, and, perhaps, heavy handedness in foreign policies, but I’m sure that every country has things that in retrospect they would like to undo e.g. Iraq – maybe.
This sense of anti-nationalism started, I believe, with President Carter and is now being perpetuated with President Obama. People here are reacting very strongly to his apologistic stance throughout the world. As a consequence, there has been a noticable resurgence of patriotism across the country i.e. the Tea Party Movement. Nearly every other house in our neighborhood flies an American flag these days.
That being said, Country Music is an abomination.

Interesting that you say this is a number 1 hit in Aus. I'm in Aus and have never heard of it, let alone heard of it being number 1 hit! Maybe I've been hiding in a bucket with the volume turned right down!
I think it's actually 'Amerakun'. Perhaps it's a hit there? Ask Bill!
Bill Henry - wash your mouth out with soap.........some country music is very good.......I said so......so there!!!

well i did hear that from an OAP who lives in sydney - and he once visited america 38 years ago - so maybe he got confused - could also be an urban myth! Like this one which came from the same man when he visited africa - well we think he visited africa!
Tarzan had been living alone in his jungle kingdom for 30 years with only apes for company and suitably shaped holes in trees for sex.
Jane, a reporter, went to Africa in search of this legendary figure. Deep in the wilds she came to a clearing and discovered Tarzan vigorously thrusting into a jungle oak. She watched in awe for a while. Finally, overcome by this display of animal passion, Jane came out into the open and offered herself to him.
As she reclined on the wild grass, Tarzan ran up to her and gave her a big kick in the crotch. In pain she screamed, "What the hell did you do that for?"
Tarzan replied, "Always check for squirrels."

Never have sex with a retarded dwarf.
It's not big and it's not clever.
Especially never do this in a lift - it's just wrong on so many levels.
