I am looking for mountboard storage / workbench - please let me know if you have anything that might be of interest

same as a reply i gave to another question,did mountboard storage using slat wall and 9mm mdf,you put the slat wall top and bottom and the mdf fits nicely into the slots you have,you can put thicker mdf on the sides and another top on if you want,works well for me and i get 40 or so sheets in each compartment

I've never liked the idea of open storage under a workbench - too much activity and therefore risk of damage to stuff poking out, or even flush; not to mention tripping hazards.

Remember the people selling these things realise they take a lot of space - so they plug them as dual-purpose - and so they should be, why waste that space! But in a lot of workshops they need to be workbenches as there isn't enough room for a dedicated 'bespoke' bench.

The bench you work all day at should be the right height for you otherwise you can develop back problems and these storage units (I have two but they don't double up as a workbench) are built to cater for mount board size; not your height. I put 6 days a week around my workbench and at my age if it was wrong I'd be feeling it by now.

A good guide for the correct height of your workbench - bend over until your back is parallel to the ground - the distance from the top of your shoulder to the ground is about right for the height of your bench.

Then you need to watch the height of any employees you take on!

Optimal workbench height is considered to be 50-100 mm below elbow height, so benches that can store standard sheets of mountboard should be OK for most people. However we are all different, whatever you are comfortable with is right for you.

We have a self-made 8 x 4ft bench which can be walked all around, it is raised off the ground a couple of inches to give toe room and has 20 bays/slots for storing mountboard. We all, ranging from 5ft-5in to 6ft, find it quite comfortable to work at. Well, no complaints so far.

I wondered if you'd got fixed up with the bench you were looking for ? I have a custom built unit in storage as I no longer have the space to use it. It fits against a wall, slopes for easier cutting and has storage space underneath - 3 or 4, I forget which - slide in from the side
spaces where I kept 2 different kinds of glass and mdf - full sheets so would obviously take mountboard with ease. The top was big enough for
a 4x3 sheet of glass plus. It's made from square section steel and bolts together - the top is blockboard and was carpeted.
If you're interested I'll find time to photograph it. I'm in S. Yorkshire 10 mins from the M18 Doncaster exit.

If you do go the slatwall route get it from Jazolo in Northampton. You won't find it cheaper anywhere else.

It comes on a pallet dropped off a lorry so make sure you can accept their delivery. Driver was not too happy about getting the pallet truck across the gravel in front of us. It is also very heavy so make sure you have some help when it arrives.

My handy hubbie has found some old slat wall at his work place (he is a manager at a garden centre) so I have something temporary to get started with
I have just measured and sketched my worktop layout - eek! Nearly there, then I can start buying the goodies to practise with

Hi,

I meant to ask you all what internal storage space you need for the mountboard?

The sheets seem to come in 44" x 32" but do you need a couple of inches clearance above them for easy access so you don't "ding" them when moving them in and out?

Once you have added "toe space" below + thickness of work top you are probably up to about 36" - would that be right?

I just wanted to say that my slat wall based storage bench is nearly done - just need to add the worktop and the cosmetic trimmings.
