Following on from the recent topic about mounting things (here: http://theframersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4609 )
I thought I would have a go at the formed rod mounts mentioned by Roboframer and Merlin in that thread. I got the piano wire and shrink tubing on ebay, both 3m and a couple of pounds each.
Printed of a PFM article by James Miller to use as a guide:

The wire I used was 21 gauge (1.175mm) which was probably a bit thicker than I needed, it was quite tricky and fiddly to manipulate the wire, and to get the tubing over the bends, but given that it was my first attempt I was quite pleased with the outcome. The old car badge is surprisingly heavy, I've had it for years and always intended to frame it with some other classic car bits as a 'shadow box' display. The frame is one I made (22ct moon gold) for a customer, it got very badly damaged so I made a replacement and kept this one to cut down and use on something really small one day, just managed to cut out the bad bits.
There is 3mm Correx behind the black mountboard, where the wire is secured in the flutes with Araldite epoxy adhesive. The badge can be removed in the future, although I doubt the mounting could be used a second time to hold it securely, I think the rod mounts would need to be moved to much out of shape to make them reusable. But given a few more attempts I think I could make them reasonable quickly and more effectively.

Re: Formed Rod Mounts Sample
I've read with great interest and intend to do a little experimentation of my own over the next few weeks. I can see it has its limitations but I've started to frame some unusual military memorabilia and this method will come into its own here.

This is one of two paintings on very stiff bark, that I mounted with formed rods. The bark was around 50 inches by 22 inches.
