Hi,
I am from South Africa, living in a small town called Hermanus, famous for whale watching, close to Cape Town.
I have just bought myself a Morso and a underpinner. The idea is to start my own small framing bussiness.
There is one guy up in Johannesburg that give an accredited framing course in our country, which I plan to attend. I have been surging for books on framing. I have found a few, but they show basic home industry framing. I was also wandering if there exist books or websites that feature excamples of good picture framing ideas which will help me.
Thank you,
Roelof

The Fine Art Trade Guild has a commended framer guide that I found really useful when I started framing. It explains terms and best practice. www.fineart.co.uk
I think Lion have books for sale which should be better than what you can find in a library or book shop. www.lionpic.co.uk
Other than that, try talking to other framers. They tend to be a very helpful bunch. I would try someone in Somerset West or Cape Town so you're not too close to home. A local framer may not want competition.

Hi Roelof - damn right, not any books to serve much purpose in our shops. I think your best bet would be to scour the web for books or ask the fundi's on this forum where to look. You would learn the basics on that expensive course ( which I never did anyway ) but no where near enough to gain real expertise. What I know about this business I taught myself by always having an enquiring mind and searching for the best way to do a job with the limited materials and supplies we can get here in SA. Most importantly in my progress has been to go through this forum and The Grumble - if something good is posted there are always people who expand and give other and better ideas - if something not so cool is posted there are really helpful and willing people who give info on better ways of doing the job. Get onto this forum every night before going to bed. If you need to chat PM me and I'll give you a contact number ( I operate in Durbanville )

Any thing by Vivien Kistler is a must for your collection, in fact if your have most of the books by her you will have enough to get you more than started.

Vivian died a few months ago after a life time of educating in the framing business, her family took the decision to close her publishing company, however all or most of her publications are still available, from various sources, I posted a link to Amazon above.
I have about everything she published and hardly a day doesn’t go by with have a look at some of her stuff.
If nothing else get her book on Pricing Custom Picture Framing it will ensure you stay in business, it is one of the best books you can when it comes to framing.
Good luck with the venture.
Other sources not mentioned of information is www.thegrumble.com and www.ppfa.com

I think the best book on professional framing is "Picture Framing - the Art and the Craft" by Pete Bingham, sadly out of print now but copies are obtainable via Amazon etc.
