Problem with my Size!

No, I'm quite happy with that 'size' thank you!...

...the problem is with choosing which leaf Size to use. I'm currently using KOLNER PERMACOLL SIZE CLEAR which instructs you to wait from 1 hour to 2 days before applying the leaf. I waited 1 1/2 hours and the leaf bond wasn't great leaving gaps in the leaf which I managed to patch up successfully.

Why would someone wait 2 days to apply leaf to Size? surely the whole thing will be covered in dust by then, does the Size tackiness improve the longer you leave it?

Can anyone recommend a decent quick drying Size mainly for rolls of metal leaf not real gold. Thanks in advance.

Hi Coxby,
When applying leaf you should wait until the size just tugs at the skin on the back of your finger. This takes between 5 and 10 minutes, depending on humidity and temperature. Leaving it overnight dries it completely and you would be lucky if any stuck on at all ! For metal leaf use a thin application of Acrylic size (can be bought ready made http://www.stencil-library.com/docs/access.htm ) and paint on just enough to cover a 2 or 3 inch area. When tacky, cut the leaf and lay on in small strips with gilders tip or if you are using transfer gently roll on with your finger on the back of the transfer paper. For tricky areas use rubber tipped colour shapers ( http://www.dickblick.com/categories/rubbertippedtools/ )or a fine brush.
Then using a very soft donkey tail brush very, very lightly brush the surface to ensure even coating. Leaf should be sealed using a polyurethane varnish as it tarnishes and discolours easily.
If you want to view a complete range of gilding materials then have a look at this site. http://www.gilders-warehouse.co.uk/
Hope this helps
