Hi all, Joined the Framers Forum today and I am going to ask a common question. I have been framing for a few years as a hobby but would like to start up as a business
and the pricing structure that I was going to use is material cost ,inc vat X three and if you add in a wastage percentage what would it be and at what point of the calculation do you add it in. Also would there be a difference in calculation if the moulding was £1.50 a metre or £10.00 a metre

My first suggestion is to ensure you add overheads to your material costs before doing any margin addition. Labour is likely to be your most expensive cost and that certainly must be factored in. Oh, and be realistic about how long each job is likely to take as underestimating time is a common problem.

As far as wastage is concerned, there are varying views on this forum. I posed the same question some months back and the answers vary from 10-30%. It also depends upon whether you pay the premium for a chop service (no waste) or whether you take the wasteage hit on buying packs of moulding. For truly bespoke framers where almost everything is a 'one-off' you are bound to have higher wastage.
