Hi All

Customer came into the shop and i was asked to either frame or Hang a piece of Silk, I am unsure what is the best method for this and would like some of your advice.

It was a expensive piece but they want to show it off

How big is this silk. I wouldnt recomend hanging - the silk will get dirty in time - cleaning it could be problem. It will need to be attched to a backing - I use the word attached because without seeing the silk its difficult to work out the best way of attaching - it could be stretched - or you could trap it between a cut mount and insert - this method can work well for small sheer silks.

I would recommend buying a book called Needlework Framing by Vivian Kistler. I got all her books through ebay. As well as informing yourself, you can use it to show the customer the different mounting methods, and it gives them an idea of the labour and skill involved - which in turn justifies the price to be charged

Thanks fo the info, If i was doing a cross stitch i would normally get it laced i am not sure the lady i use would feel as confident with a piece of silk.

Do you think we could use the same method (lacing)

Had a look for the book none on ebay at the moment.

silk comes in many different forms - the flimsier stuff can be very difficult to prepare and stretching it a nightmare.
