Morso angled scale on ebay

Post by Nearlygotitright »

There is a sale on ebay for an angled scale for a Morso, that allegedly does way with the need for the vernier scale for £18.00 ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260923784973? ... 047wt_1177 . Seems incredible, but does anyone have experience of this item?

Yes, they do work. I find the morso scale easier to get accurate results but thats personal choice

Many of the double mitre saws and some morsos have this type of scale engraved into the arm, its a quick and easy system and providing you stick the scale on in the right place, it should be accurate.

The angle of the lines allow for the 45 deg cut, you line up the inner edge of the frame with the scale so no need to measure the width of the moulding.

Hope this helps

As Steve says this is the system employed on Mitre Saws (Cassese, Brevetti etc).

I can see how this works on the R H extension arm of a Morso although if you are applying this on top of the arm then the moulding will be slightly raised which will cause the cut to be at something other than 90 degrees to the face of the moulding unless the L H side is raised by the same amount. This could potentially cause problems with the cut.

What happens on the extended scale? The bit that goes from 0.5m to 1.5 m.

Some feed back from any one who has one would be useful.

The description for this stick on scale states that it is calibrated in 5mm increments, but the standard metric scale on my Morso is calibrated in 1mm increments.

Not for me, thank you. I'd rather keep the one I've already got as it's much more helpful to have the extra accuracy when stacking mouldings, or cutting slips to fit inside mouldings.

I guess if it allows you to cut moulding to the exact right length first time every time then its £18 well spent.....

But....
The problems I can see
1. You stick it on... it would need to be stuck on very accurately otherwise you will spend your life having to account for the measurements being out.... waste of time and effort
2. It covers up the vertical scale that you need to use with the Vernier scale... so your committing yourself to the stick on one.
3. It’s not as long as the original right hand scale. The stick on one only goes up to 40”/1020mm.
4. The thickness of it will mess up the accuracy of the cut (as J2M said) you would need another one for the left hand side to even it out.
5. As NYAF said... its only in 5mm increments. What happens when you want to go to the 1mm? Guess?

I should think in reality my above point would be trivial and after some practice it could be quicker to use... but the only way to find out is to punt 18 quid and have a go.... and if it don’t work - peel it off!

Thanks for the comments - I'm still looking for a Morso and had wondered if this would be a way of converting an imperial scale if that was what I had to settle for. Judging from the above I'd be better hanging on for a metric model.

Have you contacted Neil Stout in Market Harborough? He normally has some refurbished Morsos for sale and coming from him you can be assured of what you are buying.
