[Ash the Framer]

New problem
New customer wants a thick papyrus / almost very thin looking wood to be mounted in such a way as not to obscure the ragged edge of the artwork, i have never used wheat starch paste or paper hinges but is this the way to go? can you mix the paste and basically may your own conservation double sided tape so it sticks in the middle of the back mount to look like its floating?

Any help / advise much appreciated.

Papyrus can be quite heavy - Vivian Kistler (Conservation Framing) recommends using a pass though (slit) hinge for the top with z hinges at the bottom if this is the case.

You could use SCMC paste instead of wheat starch.

We've just got copies of Conservation Framing in stock if you need one - its been out of print for a while but the guys at Omega have taken over the publishing rights and we were able to order some through them.

Don't forget to check that there is not a problem with the hinges showing through. Some papyri can be transparent enough for significant colour / contrast differences behind to show.

If it doubt check the colur of your hinging paper and your intented mount colour together from behind the papyrus during the design process.
