Can anyone recommend a decent camera? I need somthing that will bee good enough to take decent images of framing jobs and serve as a general purpose family camera. I will be using it to catalog a large number of paintings so high quality is a must but i could do without the bulk of a DSLR. Any thoughts anyone?

What sort of budget do you have in mind, Alan?

£200-£400, ive been looking at the bridge cameras in that range. Possibly the Lumix G2, but I want a single lens that allows a degree of zoom.

This article might be worth a look

My father in law is an ex pro photographer and likes the Fuji finepix range.

the camera on you phone would be ok.

Its not about the camera, its techquie

camera dont take decent picture, photographers do,

i would suggest looking in detail at what ya want to use the camera for and then narrow down from there what camera make it easest for you

I use a Canon A640 for my snappy shots 10.mp with a viewing screen you can rotate to any angle for those awkward shots,
But my all time favourite compact is the Canon G9, you should pick up one on ebay for a reasonable price secondhand.

I ended up with a Panasonic Lumix F45. Seems to do the job I need it to do. Thanks for all the advice.

Mrs D has one of those and it takes very good pics. Composition leaves a lot to be desired though and luckily I can straighten most of them in Photoshop
