aluminium box frame

Post by theframer »

Hi all need a bit of help for ideas how to make a box frame with niesen ally profile 62 the customer does not want to see any wood on the top of the ally so the box has to sit behind the ally frame does not have to be that deep as it is for a golf ball and photo i cant think of a way to attach the wood frame to the back of the ally,

Seems quite a complicated exercise. :?

I've seen ally profiles that are made for box frames. Very deep with 2x corner fixing points and a channel for the glass. Not sure if they were Nielsen or some other flavour. It may not still be made.

Nielsen do a profile (35) with 1 3/4" internal depth. Think this might be a tad shallow for a golf ball after you have the glass and backing in.

Was thinking of using this

bending it to a right angle and then using screws to hold the wood box frame in place do you think this will be ok?

Can't quite visualise exactly how the box is going to sit. Is it going inside the ally bit or perched on top?

Bending the hangers won't be easy. They are quite thick and you risk breaking them along the bend unless you have an acetylene torch. :?

I would cut a wood moulding on it's side and sit the aluminium frame into the rebate as a cap moulding, with long countersink screws through from the rear and into the alumininium moulding.

However you do this in will be a lot of hassle and very hard to charge enough for all the time and effort it will require. I'm also doing oddball jobs for people who want something which no one else will do, so I know what's involved, but this is one which I would not be willing to do.

This job is not worth the aggro to do it!

Arqadia do a couple of box ally mouldings in their 'Designer' range. You might be able to get the golf ball in if you sink it a bit into the backboard.

Then you wouldn't need the box. :D

Sorry, ignore what I said. I got the impression that the intention was to make the back from a wood moulding.

Right gotcha. :)

I'm can't find any reference to profile 64 (or 62). But I use ally frames about once every two years..... Any chance of a quick description?

I'm thinking you could drill from the back of the box - to about 1/2" of the front. A hole big enough to take a screwdiver. Then finish the hole with a smaller bit. Then you might be able to get a self-tapping screw into the ally.

But... I can foresee other complications even if you did that. I'd tell better if I knew the shape of the ally. 8)

This one would make life a lot simpler.

I reckon you could just about get a golf ball in that if you sunk it a couple of mm into the back board.

Hope you make sence of this, but this is a box framed ali frame where the customer wanted a narrow frame on front.

I make a simple flat frame, about 6mm thick, 30mm wide, which sits in the ali frame, if you have enough width you can use the spring clips to hold it in place or as I did with this one space it out so that it fills the space in the ali frame. Here I was just checking it fitted before attaching the box frame.

On to this you can pin/screw your box frame, in this case I turned a square moulding through 90 degrees and painted the inside to match.

The piece being framed and the back board sit in the rebate.
I'll do a drawing if that would help.

This is one I did some time ago and shows the construction better. The box frame is screwed to the frame inside the ali frame so the springs can be fitted before attaching the box on the back, giving a tight clean fit.
