Do may people get requests to do non-framing related jobs just because people know that you have some decent kit? I live in an area where there are number of smallholders. I had a chap in today wanting some plastic laminate cutting up into smaller sheets for his vegatable cloches. He had heard I have a Excalibur, or a 'big cutter thing' according to him. A few weeks ago the same person bought in an old tea tray with a glass base that needed replacing. Its a small community so I will help him out. He may even bring me dome framing one day!
Does anyone get similar requests? And how do you work out what to charge? Does materials + time seem reasonable?

I do a lot of glass cutting for customers. The local hardware shop no longer cuts glass, so I'm the only immediately local glass supplier. I've considered stocking 3mm & 4mm glass, but haven't done so yet!
I price 2mm glass to take away at two thirds of price that I do for framing.

Yep, I get requested to do all sorts of things.
Sometimes they get a yes, sometimes no.
Not long made a simple Ash fireplace surround for a customer I do cross stitch framing for.
I just charge may hourly rate plus any other costs/materials.
Makes life interesting

Just got a job for a local printing company, using our new Valiani to cut 'fisherman friends' shaped printed designs, there is only 100 to do so won't take long to do

Re: Non framing jobs
I did a menu sign for a local cafe the other week.
Sheet of mdf painted with blackboard paint with a 2" x 1" timber frame. Undercoated and painted gloss white.
Cost of material x 5 semed reasonable for a half hour job and I got a free fry up when I delivered.
More of a goodwill gesture than a "job" as such but I have been asked by a couple of other local traders to do the same for them so well worth it.

Re: Non framing jobs
we did some random stuff in the early days as it all helped but thankfully less need these days. We hand scanned 40 volumes of books and made them searchable pdfs for a museum. We cut some glass for a greenhouse repair, we made 120 menus for a local cafe, we designed some business cards and outsourced the print. If you've got time and it pays at normal rates, why not. The only exception is if you have a fixed plan and don't want to get distracted from your main goals or activity. We once quoted on making 750 perspex tickets for the launch of a BMW car event, but it never came off as they didn't have time to wait. Through an ad agency working for BMW. Would have been nice to get.

This week I've made a 6 drawer A1 plan chest in Birch Ply. Very easy when you have the right machinery.
Took about 6 hours.
