Gallery wrapped oil painting(How to frame)

Post by Phill »

I'm New to the forum and hope someone can help.
When framing an oil painting on the deep gallery stretchers, is it ok to frame them with a moulding that has a normal rebate or do you think like I do that they look better in a deep rebated moulding, I have seen them done both ways, It is hard to find a deep rebated moulding that is right for the painting sometimes, so I surpose they would have to be done in a normal moulding, but do they look right, and what does your customer expect?

its nice to see these things now coming in to be framed - often after a year or two on the wall. Some industry writer predicted this would be the scenario a year or so ago.
anyway....
as most of these gallery wraps will be fairly new, you can always re-stretch it onto a "regular" set of bars if required - make the picture fit the moulding rather than find a moulding to fit the picture.

Or if using a wider (say 3 inch) moulding they wont see the sides anyway so a deep one is not required.

I favour the re-stretch method personally. (thats just imho) - then you can start the job with "a clean sheet" and the customer can have exactly what they want, rather than a compromise.

and you get some deep stretcher bars to throw some canvas around and donate to a friendly artist or deserving cause (or the shop's bargain-bin)

Bit of luck it'll come back a fortnight later and the whole process can begin again....

few options here - as you have said deep rebate - the open faced mouldings that are designed for this purpose can work well. I agree that the moulding rebate has to be fairly deep or the frame looks a bit odd.
