Mounting 70 year old newspaper

Post by Dave »

An old and somewhat frail newspaper, how would you mount it?

Fistly I would consider copying the relevant section of the paper that is to be displayed, then put the original in a box for the customer to store safely. If that is not an option then I would probably encapsulate in Mylar/Melinex to provide the support and discuss with the customer floating or placing in a mount.

Clear polyester film encapsulation. If a single page of the newpaper see page 5 of attached Jim Miller pdf or for a full newspaper see page 10. Also consider a good scan of the newspaper and frame that as YPF suggests.

You can buy polyester on a roll. You will need a weight of at least 95 mic which Lion sell http://www.lionpic.co.uk/product-search ... earch=7595 or PEL for 100 and 125 mic https://www.preservationequipment.com/S ... ster-Rolls

This is interesting, I first started using clear film mounting a few years ago on the recommendation of Roboframer, and it's a terrific method. But I've never actually used it for anything bigger than about 18" on the long side. How big can you go with this technique before it starts to buckle or bow?

Tabloid would ne OK but broadsheet may be a problem, the paper in the download above is folded in half.

Knowing how newspaper was manufactured 70 years ago, I would love to see how it survives after a few months in daylight. Bleach to make it white, sodiun thiosulphate as a fixative are only two of the components used in the process. Don't offer a guarantee.
