A customer has presented me with a lovely giclee print to frame all wrapped up with cellophane and ready to frame. The mount looked superb, a double with a deep coloured bevel, outer mount an off white texured. Easy job I thought but having put the item behind glass was horrified to notice what looked like a blue/grey stain on the mount card -quite noticeable behind glass. Removing the backing board etc and upon closer inspection the mark doesn't appear to be a stain but a flaw in the mount card -goes quite deep and not removable by eraser or careful use of a blade! If anyone out there has knowledge of this type of flaw could you explain to me what it is so I can offer an explanation to the customer.

The board is made from pulp; something got in to it.

It's quite common to get niggly bits in mountboard. And yes, some only leap out after you put glass over the mount.

The most common one is the tiny little black bit that you try to dig out only to find there is a lot more of it beneath. Now and again you get one appearing on the bevel.
