Is it possible to cut 1.5m lengths on a Morso

Post by Framegirl »

Hi there

I need to cut 1.5m lengths of moulding and I wondered if it is possible to do using my morso.

The scale goes up to 1.03m, but then there is a sort of double scale which goes over 1.5m. However, if I position my moulding using the double scale to cut it, it is clearly not long enough.

Can anyone advise please?

Thanks

You have to improvise. :)

You could simply add 2x the moulding back width to the length of the rebate you need and mark the outside edge with a pencil and cut to the mark. Err on the generous side and shave it down until spot-on. Then it's just a question of cutting the opposite rail until you have two identical.
Sometimes, if the length comes within the length of the scale (with the slidy bit removed), I clamp a small mitred piece of flat wood to the scale to act as a stop so I can repeat multiple lengths.

Set the stop for 750mm, cut a scrap piece measure the length and double it. Mark the moulding with a piece of tape on the back (non rebate) edge and align this with the lower blade. Make the cut, offer up the new length back to back with the remaining moulding and make another mark with tape.

I Chopped a 2.3m frame on ours, that was the easy bit, cutting the mount was the hard bit , I just measured the out side dimension and marked with a pencil .

Pretty much what Prospero said.

Another method is to mitre the left end of the moulding, measure the length, deduct what you want to cut and set the stop to that, erring on the side of caution and then trimming.

I undo the bolt that hold the clamp to the sliding scale, then move that to the left, near the angle end, and repostion the sliding scale , so if 70mm move the scale to read 70 on the 150 plus your normal expansion amount (2mm) then tighten the clamp.

Many thanks for all the advice. I have managed to cut the moulding to the right length. It is a bit fiddly though!!!
